Unheimlich
I was commissioned to develop the credits for Reserva Films’ newest short film, Unheimlich. Its synopsis is the following: During a rainy night, a girl wakes up after a nightmare. She will discover that things are not as normal as the house has become a surreal maze, with a sinister creature waiting in the shadows.
This project could not have modern credits due to the film’s impressionist and vintage aesthetics.
The art direction had to be precise which is why we worked on different versions and different styles. It wasn’t until the end of the post-production process that we realized we could not use anything too elaborate or outside the mindset of an expressionist film.
The concept I used to match the visual aesthetics in the credit sequence was the absence of light. Since duality is a constant in the film’s storyline, the darkness and light concept was among the ones to explore. Therefore, I decided to have a lamplight brighten one of the walls as the credits run; it could be the basement’s wall or the wall in one of the rooms in the film.
